Tyler Gaston comes to SCC with experience at the Junior College level as a player, coach, and athletic director. His tenure at Grays Harbor College included stints as the Head Basketball coach and Head Golf coach, in addition to his job duties as the athletic director. At GHC, Tyler organized the additions of the Women’s Soccer program and Women’s Volleyball program. In addition to adding new sports, Gaston focused on growing roster sizes, improving the department’s level of competitiveness, and building the athletic website into one of the premier sites in the conference. Tyler is most proud of his collaboration efforts with the other members of the student services team at Grays Harbor. In 2013, GHC was honored as the best community college in the state of Washington and 15th nationally. This ranking was based on academic challenge, student effort, retention rates, and various other criteria. The staff at GHC took great pride in providing its students with better support, and services, than its competitors. Gaston seeks to bring the same style of cooperation to SCC, in hopes of improving retention and completion in the athletic department, and becoming a valued team member as SCC strives to grow its enrollment.
Before working at the collegiate level, Gaston was a public high school teacher and varsity head coach for football and basketball in the state of Idaho. Gaston’s family remains in Idaho, where he spends summer vacations backpacking in Central Idaho’s Sawtooth Mountains, and fly-fishing near the Stanley, Idaho area of the Salmon River tributaries.
