Bio
Steve Henson was named head men’s basketball coach at Southeastern Community College following a career that has included stops at Baylor, UTSA, Oklahoma, UNLV, South Florida, Illinois and the NBA.
 
Henson most recently served as an assistant coach at Baylor under Scott Drew, contributing to the Bears’ continued postseason success in one of the nation’s premier conferences. Prior to Baylor, he spent eight seasons as the head coach at UTSA, where his teams were known for up-tempo play, guard development and offensive freedom. In 2017-18, Henson led the Roadrunners to 20 wins, a postseason victory in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament and Conference USA Gene Bartow Coach of the Year and NABC District 11 Coach of the Year honors.
 
Before becoming a head coach, Henson worked under longtime head coach Lon Kruger at Oklahoma and UNLV. At Oklahoma, he helped the Sooners reach four straight NCAA Tournaments, highlighted by a trip to the 2016 Final Four, while helping develop National Player of the Year and NBA lottery pick Buddy Hield. At UNLV, Henson helped the Runnin’ Rebels reach six postseason tournaments, including four NCAA Tournaments and the 2007 Sweet 16.
 
A native of McPherson, Kansas, Henson graduated from Kansas State in 1990 after a standout career as a four-year starting point guard. He was a two-time All-Big Eight selection, honorable mention All-American and team captain, and remains Kansas State’s all-time assists leader. He also holds program records for assists per game, free-throw percentage, minutes played, starts, consecutive games played and consecutive starts.
 
Henson was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round of the 1990 NBA Draft and played seven seasons in the NBA with the Bucks, Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets, Portland Trail Blazers and Detroit Pistons. He also continued his professional playing career overseas.
 
Henson and his wife, Cindy, have two sons and three grandkids.
